Police are investigating reports that a Hamas flag was flown during a pro-Palestine rally in Brisbane on Sunday. Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organisation in Australia, and displaying its symbols is considered a Commonwealth offence. Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman confirmed the matter is being taken “very, very seriously” and investigators are seeking to speak with the man alleged to have displayed the flag.

Wildman stressed the act did not represent the broader protest, which he described as overwhelmingly peaceful. “It’s disappointing that in amongst a protest group where the majority of people are trying to get a particular message across, there are still individuals that will do their own actions,” he said.

Police also briefly detained a counter-protester who was seen shouting the national anthem and making gestures at demonstrators from the South Bank busway station. He was removed for his own safety and released without charge.
