Police launch state-wide road safety campaign for Spring holidays

The Queensland Police Service has launched Operation Xray Spring Break, a state-wide road safety campaign aimed at reducing crashes during the busy September school holidays.

The operation runs from Saturday, September 20, until Friday, October 10, covering both the holiday period and the first week of the new school term, when traffic volumes are at their highest.

Police will be increasing their presence on the roads, using both visible patrols and covert operations to target unsafe driving. Enforcement will focus on the Fatal Five: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.

As of September 18, 218 people have died on Queensland roads this year, with many crashes linked to preventable behaviours.

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler from the Road Policing and Regional Support Command said the aim is to keep Queenslanders safe as thousands of families and holidaymakers travel across the state.

He urged motorists to plan their journeys, allow extra time, take regular breaks and remain patient with heavier traffic.

“Every decision on the road matters and every life lost is one too many,” Chief Superintendent Wheeler said.

The QPS says reducing the number of road deaths remains a priority and has reminded drivers that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
