Man arrested after 240km stolen truck chase

A man is in custody after an allegedly stolen truck was chased for more than 240 kilometres along Queensland’s Bruce Highway on Wednesday, in a dramatic police operation that stretched from Brisbane to the Fraser Coast.

Police said they were first alerted shortly after 10.15am when the vehicle was reported stolen from Elizabeth Street in Brisbane’s CBD.

Within minutes, the truck was tracked heading north through Brisbane’s northern suburbs before joining the Bruce Highway. The pursuit continued through the Moreton Bay region, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, with officers from multiple police districts involved.

The Queensland Police Service confirmed that PolAir was deployed to monitor the truck’s movements from above, while ground crews coordinated efforts to contain the vehicle.

At Yandina on the Sunshine Coast, tyre spikes were successfully deployed. Despite the damage, the truck continued travelling north on its rims, with debris and boxes falling from the rear of the vehicle onto the highway. Police later confirmed no motorists were injured as a result.

Traffic along parts of the Bruce Highway was slowed or diverted as the chase progressed, with witnesses reporting long lines of vehicles pulling aside to let the convoy of flashing lights pass.

The pursuit finally came to an end just before 2pm when the truck came to a halt near Canterwood Road at Owanyilla, about 20 kilometres south of Maryborough. At 1.53pm, officers arrested the male driver at the scene.

He was taken into custody without incident and is assisting police with inquiries. No charges have yet been laid.

“Due to operational and officer safety, no further information is available at this time,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

The unusual chase left commuters stunned, with some reporting the truck’s erratic movements on social media as the incident unfolded in real time. Despite the length and scale of the operation, no injuries were reported.
